PORT OF SPAIN,TRINIDAD, OCT 7-8 2014: Welcome to “ARTS INTRANSIT 2014”. For the art lover, connoisseur, and novice alike, we curate an extraordinary cultural experience navigating the fertile canon of Caribbean Arts, at home and in the Diaspora. Our third arts festival “ARTS INTRANSIT 2014” draws Caribbean Creatives and diverse audiences together to deeply engage with the Arts to educate, train and transform our wider community. By curating such critical platforms, we aim to position an understanding of the Arts as change agent. For this festival we are working with our communities, partners, public and private sponsors, including the Ministry of Planning and Sustainability, VIII Americas Competitiveness Forum (RIAC) the Inter-American Development Bank, RBC Royal Bank (Trinidad and Tobago) and the Department of Creative & Festival Arts, UWI St Augustine.
Our festival is comprised of a presentation and workshop session at the RIAC on October 8th from 10:00am-12:00pm, at the Hyatt Regency. IADB expert Francisco Hugo, Estrazulas de Souza will present the IADB Connect Americas platform. Leading Creative Industry expert Dr. Keith Nurse, Executive Director and UWI Consulting & WTO Chair of the University of the West Indies, will deliver a workshop on conducting Economic Impact Assessments for creative enterprises. On October 7th, Caribbean InTransit will host three workshops: Project Management for the Arts, Proposal and Grant Writing for the Arts and Social Media Strategies for the Arts at Medulla Gallery followed by a networking session on 37 Fitt St., Woodbrook from 12:00pm- 5:00pm. All workshops are free to students, volunteers, artists and arts enterprises. Registration is required by Friday 3rd October via the following link:

CREATIVES OF THE CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL, WASHINGTON DC
On June 16, 2013, then Head of Youth, Solidarity and Cultural Division, Ivan Duque of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB, or the Bank); Michael Nelson, Country Coordinator for Bahamas and Guyana in the Caribbean Country Department at the IDB and Marielle Barrow, Founder and now President of the 501(c)(3) Caribbean InTransit (CIT) met at the request of Caribbean InTransit. At the heart of the enterprise of Caribbean InTransit, is the arts as a tool for social and economic change. Falling into easy alignment with the core developmental work of the Bank, a natural synergy ensued.
Caribbean InTransit’s intention was to discuss how, together with the Bank, meaningful cultural experiences could be curated to create growth opportunities for Caribbean InTransit’s network as well as those served by the Bank. Proposing a follow on from “Biennials & Art Practices of the Caribbean” proved to be too narrow an agenda. The result was a one-day symposium, hosted at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (CFCH) in June 2012, as a collaboration between CIT and CFCH.
Through a follow up session, the three entities noted that in order to produce a platform of suitable scale and visibility to display artwork, and to generate a fulsome discussion on the impact of the creative and cultural economy in the Caribbean, a longer period and diversity of events would be warranted. Within this context, the concept of “Creatives of the Caribbean Arts Festival” was born.
Therefore, the IDB, in collaboration with Caribbean InTransit, the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and the Cultural Academy for Excellence (CAFÉ), hosted the Creatives of the Caribbean Arts Festival during the Caribbean-American Heritage Month.
Creatives of the Caribbean Arts Festival featured:
- a two-month long exhibition from June 2 to July 31 at the Cultural Centre, Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC, showcasing Caribbean art pieces. Entitled “FLOW: Economies of the Look and Creativity in Contemporary Art”, the exhibition is curated by Elves Fuentes with Meyken Barreto.
- a musical/dance concert on June 19 from 6:30pm at the Enrique Iglesias Auditorium at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC, including performances from the Cultural Academy for Excellence; the Duke Ellington School of the Arts; and the Queen of Soca, Ms. Alison Hinds; and
(iii) a morning seminar on June 20 from 9:30am at the Enrique Iglesias Auditorium at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC featuring:
(a) Keynote Address by Dr Keith Nurse, Executive Director of UWI Consulting and WTO Chair of The University of the West Indies;
(b) Panel Discussions on fostering a commercially viable Caribbean Creative Economy; and
(c) Panel entitled “Voices of the Caribbean” featuring industry specialists including Barbadian scholar and dancer, Dr. Yanic Hume; entertainment lawyer, musician and Artistic Director of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, Ewan Simpson; Bahamian Pamela Burnside, fashion designer and gallery owner; and Marielle Barrow scholar, founder and Editor-in-Chief of Caribbean InTransit Biannual Journal
(d) Book Launch – IDB Cultural Center: “The Orange Economy: An Infinite Opportunity”. and the launch of Issue 4 of Caribbean InTransit’s journal “Cutting Edges: New Media & Creative Entrepreneurship”, guest edited by Dr. Keith Nurse and Alanna Lockward.
About Caribbean InTransit
In 1996, we began as a corporately sponsored exhibition of ten emerging artists in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and grew into a space hosting classes, conversations, and a series of art and jazz events. Today, Caribbean InTransit is a critical Meeting Place for social change through creativity and a showcase for Caribbean Creatives in the visual, culinary, performing and literary arts and architecture.
As a site of learning, our programming includes a bi-annual, open access, peer-reviewed journal, a newsletter, a Google talk series, a roving arts festival and an Arts workshop series targeting at-risk youth, and persons living with HIV/Aids.
We work with a community of scholars, cultural producers, students, entrepreneurs, activists, policy makers and businesses to cultivate a union between entrepreneurship and artistry, and create conversations that are important to the forward movement of the Caribbean and the Diaspora.
We achieve our goals through strategic partnerships and collaborations. To date, we have partnered with The University of the West Indies, RBC Royal Bank (Trinidad and Tobago), the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the National Art Gallery of Jamaica, the Art Museum of the Americas (OAS), non-profit organizations and enterprising others.
